Romanian President Nicusor Dan had a telephone conversation with his American counterpart Donald Trump on Tuesday evening

June 22, 2025

President Nicusor Dan had a phone conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, on Tuesday evening, according to sources cited by news channels. „One hundred percent they spoke,” confirmed Adrian Zuckerman, former US Ambassador to Romania from 2019-2021, for Libertatea news paper. This is the first high-level contact between the new leader in Bucharest and the Washington administration, amid tensions following the cancellation of the November 2024 elections, which sparked strong reactions from the US, culminating with J.D. Vance's speech at the Munich Security Conference. According to Antena3 TV sources, Donald Trump was the one who called Nicusor Dan and congratulated him on his victory on May 18 in the second round of the presidential elections. The phone call took place at 8:00 PM, Romanian time. Official sources cited by Digi24 TV specify that the phone discussion lasted about 10 minutes and was conducted "in a cordial and open tone." The two leaders also addressed strategic topics of common interest: the war in Ukraine, security in the eastern flank of NATO, and cooperation in the energy sector. Donald Trump invited Nicusor Dan to Washington, the sources further noted, emphasizing that the initiative comes in the context of a clear desire to revitalize the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the US. So far, the Presidential Administration has not issued an official statement regarding the content of the conversation, but media sources suggest that Nicusor Dan's visit to the US could be prepared for this fall if diplomatic discussions progress favorably. According to diplomatic customs, we probably will not have an official communication regarding the content of this conversation until the White House or the State Department officially communicate it. A week ago, Nicusor Dan publicly conveyed a message to the American President on platform X (formerly Twitter), congratulating him on the appointment of the new ambassador to Bucharest, Darryl Nirenberg, and welcoming the US commitment to the bilateral relationship. "I look forward to closely collaborating with President Trump and his administration to strengthen the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States. Our countries are connected by decades of cooperation, supported by shared values and interests," Nicusor Dan wrote in that message.Simultaneously, six American senators - both Republicans and Democrats - members of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a joint statement congratulating the new Romanian president and reaffirming the "unwavering" nature of the US-Romania alliance. "The Euro-Atlantic community is stronger when Romania is on board," the document stated. It is also worth noting that Nicusor Dan had discussions earlier with the Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Bucharest. The latter also met on Tuesday with Ilie Bolojan. Tuesday evening's phone conversation may equate to an official recognition from the Trump Administration of the outcome of the presidential elections in Romania and, more importantly, a revival of diplomatic relations between the two countries, as emphasized by TVR Info.
