Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not recognize legitimacy of “elections” in separatist regions of Ukraine

November 10, 2018

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) does not recognize the legitimacy of the so-called “elections” of November 11 in the regions controlled by separatists from Donetsk and Lugansk, on the territory of Ukraine, and firmly condemns their organization. According to a release issued on Saturday, these elections are “a grave infringement on the Ukrainian constitutional order and the commitments assumed during the Minsk Agreements, the agreed format that seeks to peacefully solve the conflict.” MAE reiterates its support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine in its internationally-recognized borders and firmly condemns any attempt to ignore international norms and to undermine the efforts to achieve peace in eastern Ukraine. According to the release, MAE appeals to the responsible parties to actively involve themselves in dialogue in order to overcome the current crisis and to identify solutions in conformity with the norms of international law and the wish of all European states to live in peace and security.
