Romania's national electricity consumption down by 6.7% nine months into 2023

Romania's national electricity consumption decreased by 6.7% in the first nine months of the year, compared to the similar period of 2022, totaling 36.529 billion kWh, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics.Electricity consumption in the economy was 27.775 billion kWh, lower by 5.2%, while the population used 10.9% less electricity, respectively 8.448 billion kWh.At the same time, public lighting registered a decrease of 22.7%, up to 305.9 million kWh, and the own technological consumption in networks and stations was 3.698 billion kWh, down by 3% (114.5 million kWh ).Total electricity production was 3.1% higher in the first nine months of this year, totaling 42.922 billion kWh. The quantity produced in hydropower plants increased the most in the analyzed period, by 39.6% compared to the same period in 2022, followed by the production from nuclear-electric plants (+2.8%) and that of renewable energy from wind turbines, by 2.5%.On the other hand, production decreases were recorded in photovoltaic power plants, by 7.6%, and in conventional thermal power plants, by 20.3%.According to INS data, electricity imports were lower by 8.1% in the first nine months of this year, recording a quantity of 5.913 billion kWh, while exports increased by 68.4%, up to 8.607 billion kWh.In the analyzed period, primary energy resources decreased by 1.9%, and electric energy resources increased by 1.6% compared to the same period in 2022.The main primary energy resources, between January 1 and September 30, 2023, totaled 24.72 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), down by 466,300 toe compared to the same period of the previous year.Regarding natural gas, production increased by 66%, up to 5.59 million tep, and imports decreased by 35.8%, to 1.52 million tep.Imported petroleum products also experienced an increase of 682.9%, totaling 3.1 million toe.
