Romania's staff shortage is driven by decreasing share of high school graduates, workforce migration

September 28, 2023

Romania's staff shortage is driven by the decreasing share of high school graduates and workforce migration, to which adds the mismatch between market demands and the education offer - a trend that is also noticeable in Western Europe, shows a survey by brokerage house XTB Romania."In June, the nationwide average gross salary was 6,854 RON in industry, 15,110 RON in IT and communications (especially the IT area), and 12,948 RON in financial intermediation and insurance services. Two years before, the gross salary was 5,321 RON in industry, 11,481 RON in IT, and 9,720 RON in finance. Whereas the IT and communications salary was 115.7 percent higher in June 2021 versus industry salaries, the difference increased to 120.5 percent in June this year," the survey shows. Thus, although insufficiently statistically captured, the difficulty of finding tradesmen such as electricians, plumbers, painters is reflected in the rates charged and the incomes that progressively close the gap to IT or finance pays. But the slower response, for the time being, from other areas has allowed IT salaries to take off compared to industry pays. With continued progress of artificial intelligence, OpenAI recently announced the development of an enterprise version of ChatGPT intended for companies."It will operate faster and address concerns about the use of companies' data, with the promise that they will not enter the corpus of the model used in such a way as to become, indirectly and without the consent of the owners, public information or accessible to other users," the survey states. Thus, AI adoption by companies could speed up, the effect being the multiplication of its practical applications. The complexity of the problems that can be addressed is increasing, but important gaps remain in terms of the completeness and correctness of the answers.
