Rompetrol Rafinare continues investments in storage capacities

December 21, 2023

Rompetrol Rafinare, member company of the KMG International Group (Rompetrol), has completed the modernization of two new tanks in the storage park of the Petromidia Navodari refinery. The investment for the two projects was approximately 6.5 million dollars and is part of a general program of maintenance, rehabilitation and modernization of the storage park.   "Through such works, we aim to increase flexibility in the operational sector, the rehabilitation of existing capacities being a business necessity. Recently completed projects, on schedule and in compliance with all safety regulations, bring us closer to these goals. At the end of the general program, we will have the capacity to store 20% more diesel and we will be able to better manage the flows of finished and semi-finished products", said Florian Pop, General Manager of Rompetrol Rafinare.   The last completed project aimed the reconstruction of a gasoline tank (B6), with a capacity of 5,000 m3. This was achieved through the use of a technique that involved the utilization of hydraulic jacks. Thus, all welding and technical operations were carried out on the ground, each component of the tank being, then, climbed with the help of the new system.   The re-introduction of the tank, whose capacity has been increased by 10%, can increase the reliability of the Petromidia refinery by 25%, in the event of a technological shutdown of the Naphtha Hydrotreater (NH) unit. Thus, the risks of the production unit having affected operational yields are excluded.   Previously, specialists from Rompetrol Rafinare, together with those from Rominserv (the general contractor of the KMG International Group), successfully completed the reconstruction of a diesel tank (M92) of 12,720 cubic meters - 20% more capacity compared to the initial specifications of the tank.   With the re-introduction of the tank into flow and on the basis of the constant works carried out in recent years, the total diesel storage capacity in the Petromidia refinery has increased by over 20%, which gives the Navodari unit greater flexibility in the transportation of finished products.   Rompetrol Rafinare is currently running projects for the rehabilitation of two other tanks, one vacuum residue tank, with a capacity of 10,000 m3, respectively a vacuum distillate tank, with a capacity of 5,000 m3.   The general program for the rehabilitation of the storage tanks in the Petromidia Navodari and Vega Ploiesti refineries will run until 2027 and, to date, total investments of over 10 million dollars have been made, starting 2022.   In total, rehabilitation and construction is planned for about 50 units. It is the second major project started, since 2007, until now, which is intended for the modernization of the storage park. A similar investment was included between 2011 and 2020, when KMG International (Rompetrol) allocated over 17 million dollars to the rehabilitation of over 20 tanks.   The significant shareholders of Rompetrol Rafinare SA are KMG International (54.63% - directly and indirectly) and the Romanian State through the Ministry of Energy (44.7%).
