Russian Ambassador in Bucharest, summoned by MAE

April 17, 2024

The Russian ambassador in Bucharest, Valeri Kuzmin, ironically commented on his summons to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), claiming that “it was the vaguest approach” encountered during his stay in Romania and that he could “only guess” why he was summoned. Kuzmin was summoned to the MAE at the end of the week, after the statements of the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, were published on the Facebook page of the Russian Embassy, as a reaction to the European Parliament’s resolution regarding the return of Romania’s treasure illegally appropriated by Russia.   After his summons to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Russian ambassador in Bucharest commented on this approach for the Russian news agency Tass, and his statements were posted on the embassy’s Facebook page. He claimed that the Romanian authorities did not clearly communicate to him the reason for which he was summoned.   “In an impersonal and vague form, we were presented with the statement that, according to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the embassy’s communication was too creative, emotional and wrong. Since the subject of the conversation was not clearly defined, we could only guess that the statements refer to our reaction to the actions of the Romanian MEPs and the Romanian side in general during the preparation and adoption of the recent resolution of the European Parliament regarding the return of the Romanian gold illegally appropriated by Russia in the past by more than 100 years”, claimed the Russian ambassador to Bucharest in the interview granted to Tass.    Kuzmin says that “it was the vaguest approach” he encountered during his stay in Romania. “For my part, I said that if it turns out that some of the facts I cited do not correspond to reality, then we are ready to publish an error. In accordance with the letter and spirit of the Vienna Convention, a diplomatic mission in a foreign country must communicate the official position of its government to the state of accreditation, leadership and public opinion,” added the Russian ambassador to Bucharest.
