Senate president: Investment in Ukraine's resilience is a security investment for the entire Eastern European region

November 16, 2023

Senate President Nicolae Ciuca declared on Thursday that Romania is fully aware that Ukraine is fighting not just for its own freedom, but also for the security of the entire Europe, and emphasized that the investment in Ukraine's resilience is a security investment for the entire eastern region of Europe."The European Union and NATO have supported and will continue to support Ukraine as long as is takes, on all the necessary dimensions. Also, Ukraine has obtained and continues to secure support through bilateral relations, and the Bucharest-Kyiv relationship is progressively gaining importance. (...) Romania understands very well that Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, but also for the security of the entire Europe. That's why I think that the investment in Ukraine's resilience is a security investment for the entire eastern region of Europe and, in fact, for the entire Europe. This is the highest stake for Ukraine, something all of us in Europe who think reasonably are obviously aware of. But there is also something else at stake and this, I think, is even more important in the long run. This second element is the European transformation of Ukraine, Ukraine's commitment on the road to EU integration. I have no doubt that one of the goals of Russia's aggression in Ukraine was precisely that of preventing Ukraine from becoming a European country, on equal footing with the other EU countries, the real purpose of the invasion was to stop Ukraine's European course," Ciuca said at the Rebuilding Ukraine Forum organized by the Romania - Ukraine Bilateral Chamber of Commerce under the high patronage of the prime ministers of Romania and Ukraine. He added that he wants negotiations for Ukraine's EU accession to open as soon as possible, as a confirmation to everyone, "friends and non-friends of Ukraine", that this country is fully committed to a better path."As we support Ukrainian resilience, we, Europeans, must at the same time prepare Ukraine's reconstruction. It is an extremely difficult mission, I mean rebuilding the country in parallel with its European transformation. But it is also a real chance to show the strength of the European development model and the strength of the European economy. We have discussed innumerable times, both in a formal and an informal setting, about the support Romania must provide in Ukraine's reconstruction process. Romania wants and can play a leading role in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. The strategic partnership between our countries, announced last week in Bucharest by Presidents Klaus Iohannis and Volodymyr Zelensky, puts us in a privileged position for actively participating in the reconstruction efforts for Ukraine. Romanian state-owned and private companies can work for the reconstruction of Ukraine and for its European transformation," Nicolae Ciuca underscored. The Senate head specified that Ukraine "must therefore win the defense war it is engaged in", but must also acquire peace, becoming an EU and NATO member country.   (Photo:https://www.facebook.com/)
