Senate President Mircea Abrudean met on Friday with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, the second most important position in the Vatican hierarchy, the meeting providing an opportunity to consolidate privileged bilateral relations and discuss the main topics of common interest on the foreign policy agenda.According to a Senate press release, Abrudean thanked for the support that the Catholic Church provides to the Romanian community and parishes in the diaspora, also appreciating the significant philanthropic and social activities carried out by Catholic religious orders in Romania."The interlocutors also discussed topics of common interest regarding the promotion of peace and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, the defense of human rights and religious freedom, and the provision of humanitarian support in crisis situations. The situation in Ukraine was addressed, as well as recent developments in the Middle East regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas, with a particular emphasis on humanitarian aspects and the steps that both parties are taking for the benefit of the affected people," the release said.On the occasion of the meeting at the Vatican, the president of the Senate reiterated "the importance of dialogue for identifying solutions to the problems facing humanity, as well as multilateralism."The meeting was also attended by the Romanian Ambassador to the Holy See, George Bologan.On the sidelines of his visit to the Holy See, the President of the Senate, Mircea Abrudean, had a meeting with Romanian students of the Pontifical College Pio Romeno, the only Romanian structure located on Vatican territory, with priest Isidor Iacovici, national coordinator for the pastoral care of Latin-rite Romanian Catholics in Italy, and priest Gheorghe Militaru, administrative vicar of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Italy.The president of the Senate was, on Thursday evening, guest of honor at the reception organized by the Romanian Embassy to the Holy See on the occasion of the National Day of Romanian Gastronomy and Wine.
