Share of innovative enterprises up by 0.5 percentage points in 2022-2024

 The share of innovative enterprises out of the total 26,572 enterprises stood at 9.3%, increasing by 0.5 percentage points (pp) in the 2022-2024 period compared with 2020-2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) final data released on Friday.In the mentioned period, 2,472 enterprises carried out innovative activities, of which 2,387 were successful innovators, implementing at least one product innovation and/or business process innovation.According to the INS data, innovative enterprises generate around a quarter of the total turnover of enterprises, although they account for just over 9% of the business sector, while around one in five employees worked in an innovative enterprise.One of the main indicators characterising innovative activity is the ratio between innovative enterprises and the total number of enterprises in the statistical population. For the 2022-2024 period, the calculation of this indicator shows that the share of innovative enterprises was 9.3%, while non-innovative enterprises accounted for 90.7%.Of the total number of enterprises, 4% introduced or implemented only new or significantly improved products, while 2% implemented only new or significantly improved business processes. The share of enterprises that had both product innovations and business process innovations was 3%.In 2024, the turnover of innovative enterprises stood at 378.752 billion lei in current prices, representing 25.2% of the total turnover of enterprises.In 2024, the total expenditure of innovative enterprises amounted to 4.563 billion lei in current prices.Between 2022 and 2024, 11.9% of innovative enterprises used at least one type of public funding for innovative activities: 7.1% from the Government, 3% from local or regional authorities and 7% from the European Union. In addition, 42.1% of all innovative enterprises had cooperation agreements for carrying out innovations. The share of large enterprises that cooperated with other enterprises was 58.4% of their total.During the 2022-2024 period, the highest shares of innovative enterprises among all enterprises in the region were recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (16.7%) and the Central region (14.3%), while the lowest shares were registered in the South-West Oltenia region (1.8%) and the West region (3.7%).According to the INS, an innovation is a new or improved product or process (or a combination of these) which differs significantly from the unit's previous products or processes and that has been made available to potential users as a product or used by the unit as a process.Innovative enterprises are enterprises that have launched new or significantly improved products (goods or services) or business processes on the market. The term covers both types of innovators, as well as enterprises with unfinished or abandoned innovations and refers to active enterprises.Non-innovative enterprises are those that had no innovative activity during the analysed period.
