Approximately 4,000 Spanish troops and Civil Guard officers will continue to be sent in foreign missions in 15 countries in 2026,including in Romania, according to the approved opinion by the government in Madrid, in its last meeting before the end of the year, informs EFE.According to the Ministry of Defense, an effort similar to that of 2025 is planned, with specific numerical adjustments in certain missions, resulting from their evolution or from commitments and rotations agreed within the European Union and NATO. Spain plays a significant role in consolidating the eastern flank of NATO by deploying terrestrial troops in Latvia, Slovakia and Romania within the Operation ‘ Persistent Effort’ which covers missions of air police and defence of the air space; and in the Standing Naval Groups of the Alliance. Under the UN flag, the biggest mission is in Liban (UNIFIL) with approximately 700 troops.Within the European Union, the Spanish armed forces are actively participating in Operation Atalanta, the anti-piracy mission in the Indian Ocean. The missions in which Spanish military personnel participate have three main strategic objectives: ensuring stability and security in conflict areas, combating terrorism and other threats to peace, and deterring and defending allied territory within NATO and the EU. For the Ministry of Defense, military personnel deployed on various international missions are 'an example of professionalism', and their work makes Spain 'a reliable partner and a point of reference within NATO, the European Union, and the United Nations'.
