Survey: More than 250,000 Romanians swapped city life for countryside in pandemic years

May 17, 2022

More than 100,000 Romanians relocate each year from urban to rural areas, as alone in the two years of Covid pandemic more than 250,000 people have decided to swap city life for the countryside, reveals a survey by Frames and Arabesque & Mathaus.According to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), in the pandemic peak year of 2020, 116,491 people switched from city to rural life, whereas the number of people to move in the opposite direction, ie from small localities to cities was just 77,825.Amid this trend, experts report that rural relocation has intensified in the last two years, as proves the share of residential building permits released in 2022 for rural areas - 69 percent of the total. A combined 404,681 sqm of residential constructions are expected to be erected this March, compared to 275,091 sqm in January 2022, and 377,606 sqm in February 2021.As many as 3,542 residential building permits were issued this February (+38.9 pct) for a total usable area of 803,035 sqm (+33.3 percent).According to the cited survey, apart from the desire for more space and cleaner air, the explosion of utility, gas and electricity costs has substantially added to the drive for countryside relocation.Beyond statistical data, this phenomenon also reflects in the sales of DIY stores that sell construction, renovation or refurbishment materials. Sales of fences and pavement products, outdoor tiles, septic tank installations for areas with no sewage connection conditions and garden watering installations have increased significantly, and thermal insulation sales top the figures.According to the cited source, sales of thermal insulation solutions will continue to be at the top. "If you are looking to insulate your home, you need to know that walls account for 30-40 percent of a building's heat loss, doors - for 10 percent, and 20 percent goes lost through the windows, while the roof accounts for 15 to 25 percent of the total heat loss," shows the cited report.
