Survey: Romania's SMEs face revenue drops of up to 50pct

May 8, 2025

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Romania are facing a series of critical problems that put their development and even existence to the test, including a drop in revenues by up to 50% and expenses that are higher than earnings, according to the findings of a specialist survey published on Thursday.According to Pixer Agency, the most affected areas are e-Commerce, B2B Services and Health & Wellness businesses, for which online customers and the sales generated by them represent between 70% and 90% of all businesses."SMEs are facing increasingly aggressive competition and a sharp increase in customer acquisition costs, which considerably reduces their profit margins. Added to this are the rapid changes in consumer behaviour, which leads to lost opportunities and decreased sales. Without a quick adaptation and high-performance digital marketing solutions, many businesses risk falling behind or even leaving the market completely. Thus, in 2025, digital marketing is no longer optional, and without a solid strategy, business suffers. The pressure is higher than in previous years. 2024 was an unpredictable year, and 2025 comes with major changes, affecting SMEs," the survey shows. However, specialists note that companies are not cutting back on their marketing budgets, but are emphasising optimising promotion costs, increasing sales, results with maximum efficiency, with a lower advertising cost and results in a shorter time. Thus, in 2025, the digital marketing budgets of SMEs vary between EUR1,000 and EUR 150,000 a month, and companies in e-Commerce, Tourism and Fashion are the largest investors in online promotion, especially in Google Ads, Facebook Ads, TikTok Ads, but also e-mail marketing."Businesses with poor sales need to make profound but essential changes in their digital marketing strategy, calling on specialists with proven results. By correctly redefining the customer profile, the right positioning, setting up an efficient sales funnel that turns users into buyers, optimising the cost per click by up to 40%, but also the implementation of intelligent automations, there are visible increases in sales from the first 30-60 days", note the consultants.Founded eight years ago, Pixer Agency has over 200 clients in its portfolio from 35 fields, and the team includes 12 specialists who have set up over 7,500 campaigns with high-performance sales, managing budgets in excess of EUR 15 million.
