Syrian national attempts to set himself ablaze in front of Israel's Embassy in Bucharest

July 2, 2024

A 34-year-old Syrian national attempted to set himself ablaze with an incendiary bottle on Monda in front of Israel's Embassy in Bucharest, for allegedly being denied an audience, judicial sources said, adding that the anti-terror officers immediately intervened at the scene to subdue and immobilize the man, who was then taken to the 14th Police Precinct."From the data I have, this wasn't an anti-Semitic act, he appears to have been dissatisfied about the grant of residence, but all these aspects will be cleared by the checks that are being carried out now. His criminal record will definitely be verified," Romanian Police spokesman Georgian Dragan declared on Monday, stressing that the Syrian's action was not related whatsoever to Israel's intervention in Gaza, but was about a personal dissatisfaction."Police Precinct 14 is carrying out extensive checks and investigations to determine the circumstances of the man's action and of course, the necessary legal measures will also be instructed," said Dragan. The police official stated that a security perimeter is cordoned off at the embassy, because the police are also conducting an on-site investigation, but the danger has been removed.
