Tariceanu, letter to European ALDE: I’ll express my disappointment with the content of the resolution adopted by the European Parliament

November 16, 2018

Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated on Thursday, at the Palace of Parliament, that he has not discussed the CVM report within the ruling coalition, announcing that he will send his colleagues from the European ALDE a letter in which he will express his disappointment with the content of the resolution adopted by the European Parliament. “I haven’t concretely discussed this topic (sending to Brussels a letter on the CVM report – editor’s note). I’ve discussed with Mr Dragnea along general lines. I’m yet to discuss with the Prime Minister. I’m telling you what I’ve done today. I’ll send my Liberal colleagues from the ALDE group a letter in which I will share with them my disappointment with the content of the resolution in Parliament, not with the CVM report, and with the way in which it was adopted. Meanwhile, I’ve received information from within the ALDE group, and this information strengthens my conviction that very many of those who voted did not know what this is in fact about. And there are colleagues of good faith who have started to ask themselves serious questions about the formulas that seem to represent criticism toward Romania in what concerns the rule of law,” Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated when asked whether the ruling coalition will send to Brussels a letter on the CVM report. He pointed out that the CVM report is made by office workers who do not grasp the dimension of the political responsibility of this action. “The CVM report is made by some office workers who, in my opinion, do not grasp the dimension of the political responsibility of this action. Secondly, the sources used are, obviously, I’d say unbalanced, biased. No kind of mention is made of information that would have come from official state institutions. Namely the Government, more exactly the Justice Ministry, the Parliament; other sources are used, sources that are not very clear, [it’s not clear] which those sources are,” Tariceanu explained. The Senate Speaker added that, the European Parliament’s shameful vote on the resolution concerning rule of law in Romania aside, “a bunch of untruths” were included in the CVM report. “And I believe that the Opposition has regrettably contributed to the configuration of this element, to the outlining of a situation that is not the real one. The vote we have seen in the EP on the resolution is a shame for those who voted against Romania. It’s unacceptable as long as a bunch of untruths are being said there, taken over in the CVM report too in a form that is let’s say even more elaborate,” he explained. In fact, the ALDE leader announced that, after he sends the letter to his colleagues from the European ALDE, he will draft a detailed document that would refer to both the EP resolution and the CVM report. “There will be a response on the part of Romania; whether this response will take the form of a Government letter or of another document, I can’t tell you today. After I send this letter to my colleagues from ALDE, I will send a detailed document that would refer to both the resolution and the CVM, and in which I will draw their attention, in an extremely well-documented manner, to the grave errors included in these documents, and which do not reflect reality. Aside from what I’m doing with ALDE, there will have to be an official reaction too. What the official reaction will be, I find that difficult to tell you at this moment. We will think about the best solution,” Tariceanu concluded.
