Telecom. IT: 89.1pct of Romanian households have access to the Internet

 The share of households with access to the Internet reached 89.1% this year in Romania, up 0.5% against 2024, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).According to the same source, 92.6 % of households are connected to the Internet, in 2025, in urban areas, which is 7.8% more than the share of 84.8% of households in rural areas.By region, Internet connection was more widespread among households in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (92.8% of households have Internet access at home), followed by the central (91.1%) and western (90.2%) regions.On the other hand, the lowest shares of households connected to the Internet are recorded in the southeastern region (85.7%), South-Muntenia (87.2%) and South-West Oltenia (87.8%) regions.According to the same source, the highest share of households with Internet access was recorded among households with three or more people (99.1%). Compared to 2024, the highest increase was recorded among households consisting of one person (+1.8%), and the lowest increase in households consisting of two people (+0.2 percentage points).INS data reveal that, of the total number of people aged between 16 and 74, the share of people who use or have ever used the Internet was 95.1%, increasing by 0.4 % from one year to the next, of which 98 % used the Internet in the last three months.In terms of Internet usage frequency, among people aged 16 to 74 who had surfed online in the last three months, 77% did so several times a day, and 17.6% once a day or almost every day.By development region, the highest share of people in the same age group who use or have ever used the Internet was 98.2% in the Bucharest-Ilfov region, followed by the central region - with 96.8% and the western region (96.5%). At the opposite end of the scale there is the southeastern region, with 92.9%.Statistics show that the shares of people who use the Internet decrease with age. Thus, in 2025, the share of people who use or have ever used the Internet in the 16-34 age group was 99%, while for the 55-74 age group it reached 88.7%.In 2024, among the 27 member states of the European Union (EU), in 16 countries the share of people aged 16-74 who used the internet in the last 12 months exceeded the European average, with the highest share recorded in Denmark (100%).The other 11 countries reported shares lower than the EU average, at 93.7%, with Malta immediately below it (93.5%), the distribution ending with Croatia, which ranks last with 84.6%.Also in the previous year, in Romania there was recorded an increase in Internet use, in the last 12 months, among people in the age category 16-74, by 2.4%.
