The German Unity Day celebrated in Bucharest

November 1, 2023

Germany continues to strongly support Romania's "long-deserved accession" to the Schengen area, which would be in the interest of both Romania and Germany and the whole European Union, German Ambassador to Bucharest Peer Gebauer said on Monday at the reception for the Day of German Unity and German Reunification on 3 October 1990. Gebauer reminded that Romania has achieved all technical requirements to be part of the area of European free circulation. ‘ I assure you that the significant majority of the EU states support Romania and Bulgaria in this action and they will all make efforts to find a solution so that you be part of Schengen as soon as possible’ he said.‘Romania is for Germany an important and trustworthy partner. I thank especially the Romanian Government and the Romanian people for the support offered to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, as well to the consolidation of the Eastern flank of NATO. In the European Union and as NATO ally, Romania plays constantly a constructing way and concentrates on the identification of solutions and not of issues. We need more of that kind of spirit in Europe’ the diplomat said.He said the reception marks "an occasion of deep gratitude". ‘The peaceful reunification between Eastern Germany and Western Germany was not a matter of course. This historic opportunity was possible only due to the courageous actions against the communist regime of the people in the former RDG and many other East-European countries, including Romania, which demonstrated for liberty and democracy. Similarly important was the support offered by our partners in Europe and the United States – and we thank them for this’ Gebauer said.    The countries of the European Union and the Euro-Atlantic area have to work together to protect their values, President Klaus Iohannis said on Monday, at a German Unity Day reception celebrating the German Reunification of October 3, 1990."We have to keep working together to protect and promote our values, as well as to spread them in our neighbourhood," said Iohannis.About German Unity Day, he said that the memory of the fall of the Berlin Wall shows that the European Union "is a project of peace." The chief of state added that Germany's "vocal and constant support" for Romania's accession to the Schengen area is an illustration of the proverb "A friend in need is a friend indeed.""We need now, more than ever, more unity within the European Union to successfully manage numerous challenges, both inside and outside the Union, where we face Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine and with its disastrous consequences. Thanks to the series of historical events triggered by the fall of the Berlin Wall, we find ourselves together in Europe, Romanians and Germans, as friends and European partners, but also as allies in NATO. We must continue to act together, in a constantly changing environment, in order to protect and promote our values, as well as to project them in our neighborhood and beyond," said the president of Romania.
