The government debt reached in September 1,095 billion lei

The debt of the public administration (the government debt) reached in September 2025 up to 1,095 billion lei, from 1,084 billion lei in the previous month, according to the data published by the ministry of finances (MF).As a percentage of GPD, the government debt increased up to the level of 58.9% from 58.3% in August (GDP according to the INS press release of 5 December 2025).In September 2025, the medium term and long term debt reached 1,031 billion lei, from 1,021 billion lei, in August 2025 and that for short term went up to 64,112 billion lei, from 63.107 billion lei, in the previous month.The largest part of this debt, namely 894,893 billion lei, was represented by government bonds. The loans were 177.235 billion lei.The debt in national currency was 504.22 billion lei and that in euro was 578.25 billion lei, equivalent and the debt in American dollars was 110.05 billion, equivalent lei.According to data from the Ministry of Finance, in September, the central government's debt rose to 1.070 billion lei, from 1.059 billion lei in August 2025, of which 1.006 billion lei was medium- and long-term debt. Most of the central government's debt was contracted in lei (484.877 billion lei) and in euros (472.605 billion lei, equivalent). Local government debt rose to 24.991 billion lei, from 24.733 billion lei in the previous month, of which 24.955 billion lei was medium- and long-term debt.   At the same time, in the ninth month of this year, the internal debt of the public administration amounted to 538.656 billion lei (529.577 billion lei in August 2025), or 29% of GDP (28.5% of GDP in the previous month), of which 519.06 billion lei was central government debt and 19.597 billion lei was local government debt. According to the cited source, the external debt of the public administration amounted to 556.367 billion lei (554.679 billion lei in the previous month), or 29.9% of GDP (29.8% of GDP in August 2025), of which 550.974 billion lei was the external debt of the central public administration and 5.393 billion lei was the external debt of the local public administration.   The MF specifies that the data was updated according to the fiscal notification of October 2025.
