The government in Chisinau approved the signing of a new agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Romania regarding the construction, exploitation and maintenance of strategically important transport infrastructure, including the border road bridge over the Prut River between Ungheni on both banks of Prut River. The project is part of the road connection with A8 Union Highway in Romania and includes the construction of the first kilometres of highway on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, informs on Wednesday Radio Chisinau.Moldovan Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea stated that the new bridge is one of the most important connectivity projects between the Republic of Moldova and Romania in the last 60 years. According to Vladimir Bolea, the new document addresses the needs that have arisen during the project’s implementation and provides for expanded investment in related infrastructure, as well as the utilization of funding opportunities from European funds. "The construction of the new road bridge over the Prut River, between Ungheni (Republic of Moldova) and Ungheni (Romania) is one of the most important connectivity projects between the Republic of Moldova and Romania in the last 60 years," said the Moldovan minister, emphasizing that "the project we are presenting today creates the necessary framework for achieving this strategic objective." The agreement establishes the terms of cooperation for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the bridge, as well as other transport infrastructure of strategic interest. The new agreement proposed for signing replaces the one signed in 2022 and addresses new needs that have arisen during the project’s implementation, including through expanded investment in related infrastructure and the utilization of European funding opportunities, Vladimir Bolea added. According to him, the completion of this project will improve the Republic of Moldova’s connection with the European Union, reduce border crossing times, facilitate trade, and create new opportunities for investment and economic development in the Ungheni region of the Republic of Moldova. The Ungheni Bridge project is part of the development of the road connection between the Republic of Moldova and Romania via the A8 Unification Highway. The section on the Romanian side will be 15.5 kilometers long and will include approximately 5 kilometers of highway built on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, marking the first kilometers of highway constructed in the country. The memorandum between the Republic of Moldova and Romania on coordinating the project’s implementation will be signed on Thursday in Bucharest.
