The NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, welcomed on Wednesday the US decision to deploy supplementary troops to Poland, Romania and Germany, says Reuters."This is a strong signal of US engagement, and comes along with other recent US contributions to our common security -- including 8.500 soldiers for the NATO response force and the USS carrier's combat group Harry S. Truman under NATO command in the Mediterranean," Stoltenberg said in a statement."Our deployments are defensive and proportional and send a clear message that NATO will do whatever is necessary to protect and defend its allies," he added.Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed during an online press conference on Wednesday the deployment of about 3.000 US troops to countries on the NATO Eastern flank. The soldiers deployed in Germany and Poland will come from the Fort Bragg base in North Carolina, and the contingent to come to Romania is part of Germany's 'Stryker' infantry battalion. Referring to the military deployed to Romania, John Kirby noted that it was 'an attack battalion and an infantry unit that are organized to be deployed in the short term and to move quickly as soon as they are located'.
