The unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2024 was 5%, down by 0.3% against the one recorded in the first quarter of this year, the National Institute for Statistics (INS)announced on Friday. According to statistics the employment rate of the working age population (15 - 64 years) was 64.4% in Q2, increasing by 0.2% compared to the previous quarter. INS data show that, in Q2, the employment rate of the population aged 20 - 64 was 70%. During the period under analysis, the active population of Romania was 8,417 million people, out of which 7,996 million were employed and 421,000 people were unemployed. At the same time, the employment rate of the working age population (15 - 64 ) was, in Q2 2024 64.4% increasing by 0.2 % compared to Q1 2024. According to INS, the employment rate was higher for men (72.4% compared to 56.3% for women) and for people from urban areas (70.8% compared to 56.8% in rural areas). The employment rate of young people (15-24) was 18.7%. By gender, the difference between the two unemployment rates was 0.7% (56.3 for men vs. 4.6% for women) and by residential environments of 4.4% (7.6% in rural areas, compared to 3.2% in urban areas). By age group, the unemployment rate reached the highest level (22.7%) among young people (15-24).
