„THE WAY OF THE HEROES” MONUMENTAL ENSEMBLE IN TARGU JIU,created by Brancusi, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage

July 1, 2024

The Monumental Ensemble "Calea Eroilor"(„THE WAY OF THE HEROES”), created by the sculptor Constantin Brancu?i in the municipality of Targu Jiu, has been included in the UNESCO world heritage, announced deputy Mihai Weber.   The monumental ensemble erected in Targu Jiu, between 1937 and1938, by the father of modern sculpture, Constantin Brancu?i (1876-1957), is the great sculptor’s only public creation in Romania. Exegetes define the ensemble as „the only sculpture of modern times that can be compared with the great monuments of Egypt, Greece or the Renaissance”, combining sculpture, architecture and landscape.   The ensemble stretches along an axis from west to east that crosses the city, starting from the bank of the Jiu River, from the Central Park, where the stone works are located – The Table of Silence, The Alley of Chairs and The Gate of the Kiss – continuing with „The Way of the Heroes”, on which the Church of the Holy Apostles is found, and culminating with The Endless Column, made of brass cast iron and steel, raised in the middle of a park, on a promontory.   The ensemble was commissioned by the National League of Gorj Women, chaired by Arethia Tatarescu, the wife of the Prime Minister of Romania, Gheorghe Tatarescu, and donated to the city „to honor the memory of the Gorj heroes who sacrificed themselves in the reunification war”.   It was inaugurated on October 27, 1938.
