Tourism : 93% of the touristic voyages made in 2021 were for holidays

The number of the touristic voyages made by residents in 2021 was 17,861,300, the share of the voyages for holidays out of the total being 93.0%, for business and professional reasons -2.2% and for other reasons (religious pilgrimage, medical treatment, etc.) -4.8%, according to the data centralized by the National Institute for Statistics.Most voyages made in 2021 were 1-3 nights, 62% out of the total of voyages for business and professional reasons and 61.2% of the total of the voyages for holidays.As in previous years, the preference of the Romanian tourists regarding accommodation during holidays, 53.8% of preferred accommodation with relatives and friends. There follows accommodation in hotels and similar units, 22.8% and other types of accommodation (touristic chalets, boarding houses, bed and breakfast bungalows, ship accommodation)-15.1%.The rest of accommodation, namely private rent accommodation (rooms and apartments), holiday houses (private houses), campsites and other types of free-of-charge accommodation were preferred by 8.3% of the tourists.During the voyages for business and professional reasons, the Romanian tourists were accommodated in proportion of 31.9% in hotels and similar units. Other types of accommodation were used in proportion  of 23.5%, other types of free-of-charge accommodation, 22.3% with relatives and friends and in private rented houses (rooms and rented apartments)-13.5%. The rest of the types of accommodation were preferred by 8.8% of the tourists participating in this type of voyage.The peak month for business travels was February for domestic travel with 13.2% of the total of this type of travel and January for foreign travel (20%).95.7% of the travel for holidays abroad, made in 2021 had as destination countries in Europe, the countries of the European Union being 91.5% of the total.In 2021, the Romanian residents spent over 16.379 billion lei for holiday and business travel, out of which 80.7% for those with domestic destinations and 19.3% for those with foreign destinations.Out of the total of touristic expenses for holiday travel in 2021, 81.8% were expenses for travel in the country, and 18.2% for travel abroad.
