Only one in four Romanians chooses to spend their holiday abroad. Of those, 65% have opted for destinations such as Greece, Bulgaria, Italy and Turkey, while 55.6% plan to travel by private car, according to a survey conducted by CEC Bank in partnership with the banking comparison website FinZoom.ro.Greece is the most popular foreign holiday destination, chosen by 26.6% of respondents. Around 15% selected Bulgaria, 14% plan to travel to Italy, and just under 10% to Turkey. Other destinations were less popular, with Spain attracting 9% of respondents, Egypt 4%, and France 3.5%, while all other destinations recorded even smaller shares.When it comes to choosing a means of transport for their holidays, 55.6% of respondents said they would travel by private car. Rail travel and air travel were almost equally popular, chosen by 16.6% and 16.2% of respondents respectively, while only around 11.6% opted to travel by coach.The survey also found that 70% of respondents save money throughout the year to pay for their holidays. Far fewer (10.6%) said they use holiday vouchers to cover holiday expenses, while just over 10% rely on a credit card or overdraft facility. Fewer than 7% said they borrow money from friends, and less than 3% receive a holiday bonus from their employer.Asked how they plan to pay while on holiday, just over a quarter of respondents said they would pay in cash, while a similar proportion preferred a combination of cash and card payments, using either debit or credit cards. Almost 7% said they would pay exclusively by credit card.The survey was conducted online among a representative sample of around 1,200 respondents from across Romania, representative of internet users. Around 60% of respondents are employees, more than 80% live in urban areas, and 58% hold university or postgraduate qualifications.
