Tourism :Romanian Tourism 2.0: How Technology is Transforming Travel for Romanians

October 23, 2025

Across Europe, technology is already reshaping the tourism industry, making airlines and tour operators more responsive, customer-focused, and profitable. Artificial intelligence, automation, and digital platforms have become essential tools for providing travelers with smoother experiences while opening new revenue streams for tourism companies.   In Western European markets, many tourism players have already adopted digital solutions that help them anticipate customer needs, streamline operations, and increase ancillary revenue. In contrast, Romania’s tourism industry remains fragmented and under-digitized—a gap that represents a unique opportunity for innovation and growth.   Paxport, a leading European travel technology provider, aims to be a catalyst for change by bringing state-of-the-art solutions to Romania. The company seeks to support local airlines, charter operators, and travel agencies in taking the step toward digital transformation, allowing Romanian travelers to enjoy the same smooth booking and travel experiences found in more mature markets.   In the tourism sector, more than half of accommodation providers utilize tools like dynamic pricing (52%) or chatbots (58%) to better serve customers and boost revenues. Meanwhile, Eastern European markets, including Romania, remain largely under-digitized, with many operations still handled manually. This gap creates significant potential for innovation and for companies like Paxport to introduce advanced technologies that enhance efficiency, maximize ancillary revenue, and improve passenger experiences.   “At Paxport, we believe Romania is ready for the next step. Technology can help the tourism industry become more efficient, generate higher revenues, and provide customers with superior experiences,” said Johanna Strand, Head of Commercial at Paxport AB. One of Paxport’s flagship products, PaxShop, is a digital marketplace for ancillary services that allows airlines and tour operators to personalize and sell extras—from seat selection and baggage to transfers and destination activities—in a simple, automated way. Integrating PaxShop enables Romanian operators to unlock new revenue streams while offering passengers a more personalized experience.   The platform is already changing how airlines and tour operators interact with customers across Europe and sets the stage for adoption in emerging markets like Romania.   Paxport is also developing an AI-powered chatbot integrated into PaxShop, designed to assist users directly without the need for calls or emails to support. If an issue cannot be resolved by the chatbot, the system automatically generates a support ticket, ensuring that every request is addressed efficiently. This is another step toward making tourism companies more agile and responsive to customer needs.   Beyond PaxShop, Paxport offers PaxFaB, a single-connection platform providing access to flight content from over 100 airlines—from low-cost and charter operators to NDC providers. Instead of maintaining dozens of separate integrations, travel agencies can manage everything through a single connection. The platform processes over 12 million searches daily, enabling the sale of the most suitable fares with maps and ancillary services included. For Romania, where charter bookings and tour packages are often managed manually, PaxFaB offers a direct path to European-level efficiency and higher conversion rates.   Finally, Pax2Pay, Paxport’s digital payment solution, addresses one of tourism’s biggest challenges: the cost and complexity of processing payments. High fees, complicated reconciliation, and expensive international transfers reduce operator margins. Pax2Pay transforms this model by offering secure, digital payment services already available in 35 countries, processing over £1.1 billion annually. With virtual cards, real-time transfers, and rebates on every transaction, Pax2Pay turns payments from a cost center into a source of profitability and competitive advantage for Romanian tourism companies.
