Trade: A Romanian's dining out frequency - 3.2 times a month, an eight-year low

July 22, 2025

A Romanian eats out on average 3.2 times a month, which represents an eight-year low, shows a survey on the Romanian foodservice market."This year's figures show that the market has grown to 7.1 - 7.2 billion euros, but mainly due to inflation, to price increases, therefore in value, because in terms of volume things are not so good. The purchase frequency, for example is 3.2. A Romanian eats in the city 3.2 times a month, which is the lowest frequency we have recorded in eight years," Florin Maxim, president of the Association for the Promotion of the Hospitality Industry, said on Friday.According to him, in the current context there will probably be more "price movements and changes" which will determine part of the population to opt for buying cheap food, and just a small share will continue to afford eating at expensive restaurants. The cited survey looks at more than 100 indicators of the domestic foodservice business."Practically, we examine any channel through which cooked food is sold, from standard restaurants to the delivery segment or even the Gastro takeaway ready meal departments in the retail segment. For instance, for about two or three years now, we have also been monitoring cooked food purchases from gas stations," explained Maxim. He mentioned that the survey focused more on large urban centers and less on rural areas."There's a visible difference between Bucharest and the nationwide situation. In terms of cooked food consumption, nationally we see a preponderance of consumption on weekends, as people attend special events, these are the occasions when people dine out and less going out just to eat in the city," he added.
