Trade between Romania and Germany declines 6.1pct in Q1 2025

July 15, 2025

Trade between Romania and Germany decreased by 6.1% in Q1 2025, year-on-year, to EUR 10.36 billion, according to data published on Thursday by the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Romania).Germany's exports to Romania decreased by 1.2%, to over EUR 5.68 billion, while imports from Romania decreased by 11.4% to EUR 4.68 billion."The decline in German imports to Romania (therefore of Romanian exports) is primarily due to the weak economic dynamics in Germany and a tense economic situation throughout Europe. It is precisely in this challenging context that it becomes clear again that Romania, as a business location, must focus even more on improving its competitiveness. A stable and business-friendly fiscal environment is an essential factor in that, and given the context, fiscal policy measures currently under discussion are of particular importance. It remains to be hoped that the interests of the private sector will be taken into account. In the medium term, it is essential to get out of the current fiscal imbalance, in particular through sustainable economic growth. In the short term, however, from the perspective of our business community, budgetary consolidation measures are needed in terms of expenditures, as well as a significant reduction in bureaucracy, in order to strengthen the credibility of the state and create the basis for sustainable budgetary development," according to AHK Romania General Manager Sebastian Metz.AHK Romania is the official representative of the German economy. Founded in 2002, the organisation has over 680 member companies and offers companies an important platform for networking, exchange of information and experiences.
