Trade: Head of umbrella association says Romanian beer industry already meets PPWR 2030 requirements

August 28, 2025

Over 10% of the beer bottled and produced in Romania comes in reusable containers, as per the requirement set by the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) for 2030, the next target being 40% for 2040, general director of the Romanian Brewers Association Constantin Bratu declared on Thursday at an event on environmental issues."We have a deposit-refund system in place for reusable beer bottles - and we are among the few to have this deposit system. It works from the perspective of both the environmental legislation and the regulation on reusable packaging. We have already achieved our goal for 2030, as over 10% of the beer bottled and produced in Romania comes in reusable containers. We are preparing for the next target in 2040, when the share must be 40% - and on this we must collaborate with other partners, to find these types of reusable packaging that will be part of this system," Bratu told the PRIAevents conference. He explained that the beer can has grown to a share of 33% of total beer packaging, as aluminum comes with multiple advantages because "it can be recycled several times".Representatives of recycling and sanitation companies, organizations implementing extended producer responsibility requirements, administrative-territorial units, intercommunity development associations and central authorities discussed on Thursday the most important environmental topics at the latest edition of the Pria Environment conference.
