* NATO will begin deploying Turkey’s advanced MEROPS surveillance system in Poland and Romania to boost early warning and response capabilities against escalating drone threats from Russia, www.euractiv. com informs. NATO will deploy Turkey’s MEROPS (Multispectral Extended Range Optical Sight) air surveillance system in Poland and Romania, amid mounting concern over incursions of Russian drones into allied airspace The move follows what Polish authorities described as 19 violations of national airspace during the night of 9–10 September, incidents that have sharpened calls for stronger monitoring along NATO’s eastern flank. Developed by Turkish defence contractor Aselsan, MEROPS “can be mounted on helicopters and drones and is capable of detecting enemy systems through clouds and dust. It was first publicly presented in 2022,” reports Süddeutsche Zeitung. According to the German Press Agency (DPA), training on the system’s operation will begin with Ukraine’s support, starting as early as next week. Analysts say the deployment is expected to strengthen early warning capacity and speed up responses to drone threats, which have become a persistent feature of Russia’s war on Ukraine and its spillover into neighbouring states. The decision also illustrates a broader shift towards optical surveillance systems – as a complement to radar and traditional fighter responses – within NATO’s evolving air policing strategy in eastern Europe.
