U.S. and Romania Announce Milestone in Small Modular Reactor Project, Advancing Romania One Step Closer to Clean Technology Leadership in the Region

August 22, 2024

Today, at the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (P-TECC) Ministerial in Bucharest, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins, and U.S. Trade and Development Agency Director Enoh T. Ebong joined Romania Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja and industry executives from U.S. firms Fluor Corporation and NuScale Power and Romania firms RoPower and SN Nuclearelectrica to celebrate a significant milestone in Romania’s flagship small modular reactor (SMR) project, utilizing NuScale technology, advancing it towards deployment in 2029.   Fluor Corporation and RoPower signed an agreement for the second phase of the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study that will position the project to move to a final investment decision and construction. The first phase of the FEED study was completed in late 2023 with funding from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, U.S. Department of State, the Government of Romania, and NuScale Power. Building on over a quarter century of Romania’s safe and secure nuclear power plant operation experience, this leading edge SMR project will replace a former coal plant in Doicesti with clean, carbon-free power, create jobs, spur economic growth, and help establish Romania as a clean energy leader in the region.   The United States is committed to supporting the use of advanced nuclear technologies to power global decarbonization efforts and provide energy security to partners around the world.
