For the first time, the UN Security Council is convening at Romania’s explicit request on a topic directly involving the country,Oana Toiu wrote on Facebook on Monday. The Romanian official emphasizes that the main objective is to increase diplomatic pressure and strengthen international support for regional security. “Romania’s initiative aims to bring to the attention of the international community the serious consequences of violating Romanian airspace and the need to increase diplomatic pressure to ensure compliance with international law and the protection of regional security,” she said. At the same time, Romania reaffirms its position on the need for a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine. “Together with UN partners, Romania continues to push for an immediate ceasefire and a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” Oana toiu also stated. Immediately after the incident involving the Russian drone that exploded on a residential building in Galati, Romania initiated consultations at the UN and requested a meeting of the Security Council under Articles 34 and 35 of the UN Charter, which govern the Council’s role in situations that threaten international peace and security. Romania’s request was supported by partners and allies. According to the diplomat, the drone’s intrusion and explosion in a densely populated area, resulting in injuries to Romanian citizens, constitute serious violations of the UN Charter and international law.
