UNICEF: 41.5% of children in Romania - at risk of poverty and social exclusion

July 1, 2024

35 years after the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most ratified human rights treaty in history, the implementation of the National Action Plan of the European Guarantee for Children is the opportunity of today's generation to radically change the lives of 500,000 thousand children in Romania who are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, said representatives of the National Authority for the Protection of Children's Rights and Adoption (ANPDCA), UNICEF and the Romanian Children's Board on the occasion of the International Children's Day.   The Children's Guarantee is a recommendation adopted by the Council of the European Union in 2021 to ensure that all Member States take the necessary actions to "guarantee" all children in the EU, especially the most vulnerable, access to quality and free or affordable services. to counter their poverty and social exclusion.   41.5% of children in Romania are currently at risk of poverty and social exclusion, double the EU average. The National Action Plan for the Implementation of the Child Guarantee, which was adopted by the Government in 2023, is an important step to protect the most vulnerable, with Romania committing to reduce the number of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion by at least 500.   The plan includes 59 concrete measures, divided into 7 objectives, with Romania committing to invest more than €19 billion through a mix of European, state budget, local and non-reimbursable funds.
