Ursula von der Leyen's message to mark 35 years since the Romanian Revolution

The president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, sent on Sunday on the network X a message on the occasion of 35 years since the Romanian Revolution.‘35 years ago, the Romanians stood up for the right to choose their own destiny. Many gave their lives so that their children could be free and live in democracy’ the EC president wrote on X. Ursula von der Leyen closed her message mentioning that ‘ today, Romania and Europe their sacrifice’.   22 December - Victory of the Romanian Revolution and Freedom Day   The day of the Victory of the Romanian Revolution and Freedom is marked every year on 22 nd December.By Law No 273 of 7 December 2011 amending Law No 258/2002 on declaring 22 December Romania's Freedom Day, 22 December was declared ''Day of the Victory of the Romanian Revolution and Freedom'', according to https://www.cdep.ro/. The Senators adopted on 14th June 2011 the legislative proposal through which the day of 22 December is declared the Day of the Victory of the Romanian Revolution and Freedom. The proposal initiated by the deputies and the senators, belonging to the parliamentary groups of PDL, PSD, PNL and the national minorities other than the Hungarian one, was approved by the Senate with 96 votes in favour, three votes against and six abstaintions. The initiators argued in the explanatory memorandum of the legislative proposal that it is necessary to promote, in the collective mind, the importance of 22 December as the date that marked the beginning of democracy in Romania.Law no. 273 of 7 December 2011 is entitled ''Law on declaring 22 December the Day of Victory of the Romanian Revolution and Freedom'', and Article 1 reads as follows: 'Art. 1 - The day of 22 December is declared the Day of Victory of the Romanian Revolution and Freedom.'' This law was adopted by the Romanian Parliament, in compliance with the provisions of Art. 75 and Art. 76 para. (2) of the Romanian Constitution, republished, according to https://www.cdep.ro/.   Decree No 948 of 6 December 2011 on the promulgation of the Law amending Law No 258/2002 was published in the Official Gazette No 873 of 12 December 2011.
