Vlad Gheorghe - criminal complaint against Marcel Ciolacu: He lied about the state of the economy

August 5, 2025

The leader of the party DREPT announces that he lodged a criminal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the High Court of Cassation and Justice against former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu alleging that he had lied about the state of the economy and the budgetary deficit.'Romania is in crisis, not because of the citizens' fault, but because of the wickedness and lies of Marcel Ciolacu and those who supported him at the head of the Government. He lied to Parliament and public opinion about the state of the economy and the budget deficit. He squandered billions of euros from the state budget without transparency and without justification. He blocked the reforms and preferred to feed the networks of interests of his party's clientele', Vlad Gheorghe wrote on Facebook on Thursday. According to Article 8, letter b of the Law on Ministerial Accountability: 'it is an offence and punishable by imprisonment of 1 to 5 years to submit, in bad faith, inaccurate information to Parliament or the President of Romania on the work of the Government or a ministry, in order to conceal the commission of acts that may harm the interests of the state'. Vlad Gheorghe also claims that Marcel Ciolacu knowingly presented false data on budget execution and fiscal sustainability in order to conceal an abusive and irresponsible behaviour in spending public funds.   'It's not just me saying it - his own Finance Minister has said it publicly and will surely say it in front of prosecutors. What is more, it clearly also falls under the offence of abuse of office, the damage to the state being in the order of billions of euros, damage that we are all now paying for through inflation, increased taxes and foreign borrowing. From the Budget Reserve Fund alone, Marcel Ciolacu has spent more than 65 billion lei on a discretionary basis, without clear criteria, without transparency and without legal control. I want to recover as much of the damage as possible, in particular from his accomplices who benefited directly from this public money. We want our money back, not for them to sleep peacefully in jail on our money. For all these serious offences, I am lodging a criminal complaint against Marcel Ciolacu. It is high time that those who have ruined Romania's economy be held criminally responsible. No-one is above the law', the leader of the DREPT party also wrote.
